A coat cut straight has to be cut generously, because it has to clear a jacket underneath. Buttoned tabs at the waist let it do both: loose enough to layer into, pulled in when there is nothing under it but a shirt.

Why it costs what it costs
Epaulettes, cuff tabs and waist tabs are six small pieces that each have to be cut, turned, pressed and set by hand before the coat is assembled. None of them is visible in a photograph of the finished garment, and all of them are why a coat like this is not a single afternoon on a machine.
We sell direct. There is no shop floor between this and you and no distributor taking a cut on the way, so the retail margin that normally sits on top of a piece like this is simply not in the price.
