The widest point at the hem is the easy part. What makes a flare read as long rather than heavy is where the leg starts opening: too high and it swings, too low and it looks like a boot cut that changed its mind halfway down.

Why it costs what it costs
A raw hem only works if the denim was woven to fray evenly. Cut the same shape from a cheap twill and it does not fringe, it unravels in threads down the leg — which is why this finish appears on good denim and almost never on bad.
