Plain cloth can be cut anywhere. A lace this open cannot: every panel has to be placed so the motif lands where it should and so the cut edge falls through solid ground rather than through a hole. It is the slowest part of making a dress like this.

Crochet trim is made a stitch at a time and then joined to the garment by hand; it cannot come off a machine as a continuous tape the way a woven braid can. On this dress it runs the neckline and the waist, which is why a lace dress with crochet costs what a lace dress without it does not.
